EVERY SCHOOL NEEDS A STRONG LEADER

Unlike some teaching positions, administration is a year-round commitment. During summer months, administrators are responsible for planning for the upcoming year, overseeing summer school, participating in workshops, supervising building repairs and improvements, and working to make sure the school has adequate staff for the upcoming school year. Administrators also meet and interact with staff, students, parents, and representatives of community organizations.

Your Degree—With a Master of Education in Educational Leadership you will have the knowledge and ability to promote the success of all students by:

  • Facilitating the development, articulation, implementation and stewardship of a school vision supported by the community
  • Promoting a positive school culture, providing an effective instructional program, applying best practice to student learning and designing comprehensive professional growth plans for staff
  • Managing the organization, operations and resources in a way that promotes a safe, efficient and effective learning environment
  • Collaborating with families and other community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, mobilizing community resources
  • Acting with integrity, fairly and in an ethical manner

Advancement Opportunities
Education administrators advance through promotion to higher-level administrative positions or by transferring to comparable positions at larger schools or systems. Superintendents of school systems or presidents of educational institutions are also possible advancement opportunities.

Growth Potential
According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, education administrators held about 442,000 jobs in 2004. Of these, 58,000 were preschool or child care administrators, 225,000 were elementary or secondary school administrators and 132,000 were postsecondary administrators.

Employment of education administrators is expected to grow by 12 percent between 2006 and 2016 primarily due to the increasing enrollment of school-age children. The number of students at the postsecondary level is projected to grow more rapidly than other student populations, creating significant demand for administrators at that level.

Salary
In a survey of public schools the Educational Research Service found that elementary and secondary school administrators had median annual earnings of $77,740; postsecondary school administrators had median annual earnings of $73,990, while administrators in preschool and childcare centers earned a median of $37,740 per year. Salaries of education administrators depend on several factors, including the location and enrollment level in the school or school district.

For principals and assistant principals average salaries were $92,965 in senior high schools, $87,866 in junior high/middle schools, and $82,414 in elementary schools.

  • Excellent opportunities are expected for administrators as the retirement rate is expected to increase over the next ten years.
  • Many principal jobs require a master’s or doctoral degree and experience in a related occupation, such as a teacher or admissions counselor.
