Praxis, Licensure & Endorsements

The Praxis Series

The Praxis Series™ tests measure teacher candidates’ knowledge and skills. The tests are used for licensing and certification processes and include:

Praxis I ® Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST®)
These tests measure basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. In addition to licensure, these tests are often used to qualify candidates for entry into a teacher education program.

Praxis II ® Subject Assessments
These tests measure subject-specific content knowledge, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills, that you need to begin teaching.

The University of Cincinnati Master of Education certificate, Educational Leadership, and Special Education with Licensure programs adhere to the requirements of the Ohio Department of Education. To receive the Ohio endorsement or license for these programs, students are required to take and pass the corresponding Praxis II exam:

Educational Leadership Licensure
Praxis II Educational Leadership: Administration and Supervision, Test #0411. This test is designed to measure whether education leaders have the standards-relevant knowledge believed necessary for competent professional practice. The assessment’s content is defined by the National Advisory Committee of expert practitioners and preparation faculty and confirmed by a national survey of the field.

Reading Specialist Endorsement
Praxis II Introduction to the Teaching of Reading, Test #0204. This test is designed for individuals whose preparatory program has included intensive training in the teaching of reading. Content reflects the five essential components of effective reading instruction as identified by the National Reading Panel.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Endorsement
Praxis II English to Speakers of Other Languages, Test #0361. This test is designed to measure basic linguistic and pedagogical knowledge within the context of teaching ESOL in elementary or secondary schools.

Special Education plus Licensure
In order to apply for the online Ohio K-12 Intervention Specialist Licensure, students are required to take two Praxis exams:

  • Praxis II Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications, Test #0354. This test is designed for examinees who plan to teach in a special education program at any grade level PreK-12.
  • Praxis II Introduction to the Teaching of Reading, Test #0204. This test is designed for individuals whose preparatory program has included intensive training in the teaching of reading. Content reflects the five essential components of effective reading instruction as identified by the National Reading Panel.

State Testing Requirements
