Gulbahar Beckett, PhD, Associate Professor, Literacy and Second Language Studies
Dr. Gulbahar Beckett is an Associate Professor of Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics in the TESL/Literacy Graduate Program. She has a Ph.D. degree in Language and Literacy Education (majoring in TESL and Modern Languages) from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr. Beckett’s general areas of research are sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and cultural issues in second language learning and teaching. Her doctoral research was on Canadian secondary school immigrant students’ education. She is a recipient of Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRCC) Post-doctoral Fellowship for her research studies entitled “Connecting the Development of Content Knowledge with Language/Discourse Through Project-based Instruction” and “Immigrant Dropouts: Exploring Alternative Literacy Strategies for Reintegration.” Dr. Beckett has a co-edited a book entitled Strangers of the academy: Asian women scholars in higher education, in press with STYLUS PUBLISHING, LLC. Her second co-edited book, Project-based learning in second language education: Past, present, and future, was published by Information Age Publishing in 2006. Dr. Beckett has articles published and in press in such journals as TESOL Quarterly, Modern Language Journal, The Canadian Modern Language Review, TESL Canada Journal, English Language Teaching Journal, The Journal of Asian Pacific Communication, Journal of Research on Computing in Education, Canadian Higher Education Profile, NABE Journal of Bilingual Research and Practice, and The Canadian Social Studies Journal. She reviews articles for most of these and other journals and serves on the editorial boards of TESL Canada Journal and the NABE Journal of Bilingual Research and Practice. Dr. Beckett also has several book chapters in press.
