A Commitment to Connecting Research with Practice
The University of Cincinnati Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction TESOL program is designed to prepare educators to meet the changing linguistic needs of today’s diverse population. Beyond learning theory of language, you’ll discover how family cultures can be effectively embraced in the classroom. Students gain a conscious knowledge of language as a system and learn to be effective language teachers. Teachers use this knowledge to develop appropriate goals and a wide variety of techniques for teaching students to listen, speak, read, and write so that they may communicate effectively in English and monitor their own use of language.
Teachers who specialize in developing the English skills of students who speak other languages play a vital role in the evolution of today’s education environments. Join the online UC TESOL program and learn to meet the challenges of an increasingly diverse student population with confidence. They understand the ways in which languages are similar and different. Graduates of the UC TESOL program can relate their knowledge of English to languages commonly spoken by their own students and are able to build on similarities between English and students’ home languages, and anticipate difficulties that learners may have with English.
Graduates of the TESOL program are eligible to apply for the TESOL certificate/endorsement from the state of Ohio. Out-of-state graduates will need to check with their state’s Department of Education to see if this program will meet the needs to fulfill the requirements for similar certificates/endorsements.
Upon completing this program, graduates are required to pass a Praxis Series Exam to obtain their endorsement in the State of Ohio. Graduates residing in other states will need to determine their state’s specific requirements for licensure. For more information about the Praxis Series, click here.

Hi, my name is Christian Muhawenimana, BA Ed. I would like to pursue a Master of Education (Teaching English as Second Language) OR Master of Education (Education Leadership) but I come from a very poor family and my family income is very minimal. So, can get funding on the consideration I am originally from a very poor country (Rwanda) in Africa?
Hi Christian. Thank you for your interest in the University of Cincinnati. I understand that pursuing a graduate level program can be a financial challenge. If you are currently here in the United States, you may be eligible for Federal Financial Aid. It is a non-needs based program. You can get more information about financial aid from this web site: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Also, if you are currently teaching in a lower socio-economic area or a Title 1 school, you may be eligible for the TEACH Grant. You can get more information about that from their web site: http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/TEACH.jsp. I am available to connect with you on the phone to go into greater detail about your options, please contact me at 800-226-0075 ext. 357. – Tom
